January was rough, but it is February, which means that it is Black History Month! This is a time to celebrate Black people throughout the diaspora through retelling our history, appreciating our presence, and dreaming of our future. I am personally ready to make this a loud and proud Black History Month. Each day I will be celebrating Black culture through the stories of our history, as well as the appreciation of our culture. I love being Black and for all of those who either love being Black or simply appreciate Black people, I hope that through this site as well as our own lives we can all rejoice in the contributions of Black people to this world, which are vast and wonderful.
There is so much of our history that we simply do not learn. With that lack of knowledge comes a lack of appreciation for what it is that our ancestors have made possible. Couple that with the constant shaming whenever we try to express our culture and it can be quite difficult for us to find joy in our heritage, but this month I hope that we will all recognize that there should be no shame in our game. We are an incredible people that have had horrific atrocities waged against us, but that is only a fraction of who we are.
I hope by highlighting the many ways in which we have strived, innovated, and worked to maintain as much of our culture as we can, while continuing to be creative and colorful that I can help us step away from the prevailing racism that persists to this day and take some time to connect with the good we have done, are doing, and will continue to do. Happy Black History Month to our amazing people! As we honor our ancestors and ourselves may we take up the truth that we are a people who should have always been free and even as we continue to achieve nonetheless, I hope that we can continue to destroy racist tropes and find ways to express our freedom fully in spaces where we are loved.
I am excited to spend this month being fully loud and proud. To kick this off below is Blessed Blackness by The J.B.’s:
