Curtis Mayfield was one of the most prolific singer/songwriters to come out of the 70s. From his work on the Superfly soundtrack to his compositions for the Sparkle soundtrack, Mr. Mayfield had a rare ear that combined full, vibrant sounds with heartfelt words that spoke directly to the Black experience in America. Of his many incredible albums full of music meant to uplift Black people, one of the songs that has been of great import to me is Never Say You Can’t Survive from his 1977 album of the same name.
